Sister Frennn Blog - Sweet Rice

oh my lanta, sweet rice is the stress-busting treat you need!

Sisterfrennns, let me tell you about my latest obsession: this sweet rice recipe! Y’all know I’ve been on this journey with my health and wellness, and if you saw my last post, you know Ray Peat has been my main guy lately. My friend from the UK put me on to his work, and OMG, it has been life-changing. Seriously, where has this been all my life?!

For years, I’ve had high cortisol at night, which means I’d wake up in the middle of my sleep feeling all sorts of stressed and restless. Ugh, the worst, right? But THEN… my frennn told me, “Cierra, you need more sugar to calm your body down!” Say less, sis!

Enter: Sweet rice. It’s the perfect combo of comfort food and cortisol-busting sugar. And guess what? I’m here to give you the rundown on how to make it…

what you’ll need to make sweet rice:

  • 2 liters of milk (I know what y’all are thinking: “Cierra, where’s the raw milk??” Well, sisterfrennns, heating it for an hour would destroy all that goodness, so I’m using regular ol’ organic grass fed milk here. Don’t come for me! 😆)
  • 40 grams (or 1/2 cup) of basmati rice
  • 1/4 cup of sugar  (sugar to taste( (you can use maple syrup as an alt)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • A pinch of saffron threads (because we’re fancy like that)

how to make it:

1. heat the milk
Pour those 2 liters of milk into a big ol’ pot and heat it on medium. Let it warm up for about 12 minutes. Make sure you don’t let it boil over unless you want a huge mess on your hands. (Been there, done that.)

2. add the rice
After the milk has heated, throw in the basmati rice. Let it simmer on low heat while you stir it every now and then. It’s gonna get all creamy and delicious. Be patient, sisterfrennns, this rice needs some time to work its magic.

3. sweeten it up
Once your rice is looking good and the milk has thickened (this takes about an hour, so grab yourself a snack), stir in the sugar. Mmmm, the sweetness is gonna start coming through now.

4. flavor bomb time
Add in your saffron threads for that golden color and some mood-boosting vibes. (Yes, saffron is fancy but also calming!) Then stir in your vanilla extract for that extra cozy flavor.

5. serve & enjoy
That’s it! You can serve this sweet rice warm if you’re looking for something cozy, or chill it in the fridge if you like a cold treat. And the best part? It freezes SO well. Make a big batch, portion it out, and enjoy it whenever the craving hits.

why saffron?

Okay, I know y’all are like, “Cierra, saffron tho?” But listen! Saffron isn’t just pretty—it’s a stress-buster! This golden spice has been used for centuries to help with relaxation and mood-boosting. So, we’re adding it to sweet rice because not only does it taste good, but it also makes you feel good. Win-win!

the takeaway

If you’re like me and struggle with nighttime stress, sweet rice might just be your new best friend. I seriously cannot tell y’all how much this has helped me stay calm and keep that cortisol in check. It’s sweet, it’s simple, and it’s seriously DELICIOUS.

Try it out and let me know in the comments if you ate it warm, cold, or made your own version! Don’t forget to share this with your sisterfrennns who need a little sweetness in their lives. 💛
